Happy Birthday, Mom!

Dear Mom,

We remember you with so much love and fond memories, Mom. I remember how your kept us dressed in white for church, cut our hair in Dutch bobs with big hair ribbon bows, let us play out under the street light until dark. You were the best baker and cook. I remember the marble cakes, the best apple pies, the fried donuts that you made for all the neighborhood kids. I remember when I was in the baby-chick orchestra in McKinley School and there were patterns for moms to make the baby chick outfits. Since I was chosen the rooster, there was no pattern but you made me the perfect rooster outfit with a red comb and and a big yellow beak!  I have a picture of it somewhere. I remember the birthday parties where all our friends were invited and you made all the different colored crepe paper hats. You always had the games and all the cake & ice cream and there was always Ray standing in the back of the picture making a face and sticking his fingers in his ears.

On Sundays, you always made us the best roast beef dinners with mashed potatoes and gravy and for dessert, we had your best apple pies. You were always kind and loving to us and I can't remember a spanking from you even when we were bad. I remember how pleased you were when you learned to drive and had your own car. It really made you happy when you passed your driving test!

We were all crushed when you were in that accident that took you away from us but then, we are glad you never had to suffer a lingering illness or be incapacitated in any way before you went to heaven. We all know that we will see you in heaven and with the way things are now, it will be soon. Until then, Mom, we carry on until we see you again. So much love.

The cherry pickers

What you see in this picture are some former cherry pickers. We had to wear something on our head so the branches wouldn't get in our hair. I think we made 25 cents per basket. A big basket! We didn't make very much.
